Boys basketball:
The boys basketball team had only two graduates last year, leaving plenty of athletes for this season. The team has had three games this season so far, with two wins and one loss. Compared to last year, the team is slightly smaller, but with a varsity team made up almost entirely of upperclassmen — there are two sophomores — they are well equipped for a good season.
The team is ranked last out of five in the Nisqually League so far this season.
Girls basketball:
The girls basketball team is mostly made up of juniors this year. There are no seniors on the team, which is not surprising considering there was only one upperclassman last year; Class of 2017 graduate Eva Anderson. They have had six games so far, with one win and five losses, ranking them last out of five in the league so far.
Wrestling:
Wrestling is a co-ed sport, even though it is listed under the “boys sports” section on the school and Nisqually League websites. Last year, the team was named the Co-Nisqually League Champions. This year the team is made up of 28 people, including one girl; freshman Kela Ellis. This far into the season, the team has won one match and lost one match in conference. Overall they have won one match and lost two matches. They are ranked 2nd out of five in the Nisqually League.
Winter cheer:
Cheerleading is also a co-ed sport, despite being listed under the “girls sports” section on the school and Nisqually League websites. Although, throughout the past years, there have not been many male cheerleaders at VHS. Class of 2016 graduate Rodolfo Flores was the most recent male cheerleader, participating during the 2015-16 school year. This year, winter cheer has 20 participants, with fall captains Amelia Wilke and Presley Roggenbuck continuing their leadership positions into the winter season. Compared to fall cheer, winter cheer has attracted fewer participants throughout the last few years.
