Rants and Raves

Rant: Running out of plates and silverware at lunch

During lunch, students always rush to get their food first, but it has become even more of a rush lately, as the reusable white plates and the silverware that the school normally uses for serving lunch have run out on a daily basis.

This may be caused by the low quality of the plates, causing them to break, or just the fact that the school’s money is being spend in other places. This forces students to use paper plates and potentially no utensils, which defeats the purpose of using reusable lunch items in the first place.

Students do not want to throw away paper plates and plastic utensils any more than teachers or staff do. If the school could invest in a few more reusable plates and forks, for the students and staff to use at the school for lunch, that would be much appreciated.

Then students and staff wouldn’t have to worry about running out of plates and silverware, and the rush to lunch would become less frantic and more collegial. .

Rave: More homework done online

Lately, teachers have been assigning more homework online, which makes completing assignments a lot simpler and quicker. I don’t have to lug around six different textbooks, because textbooks are as close as my computer or iPhone.

Rather than having to shuffle through a textbook to find a certain page or section, assignments on Google Classroom give us all the information we need at the click of a mouse. Textbooks have always been a pain to carry around in the past, but now, thanks to computers, Google Classroom, and online homework, I am able to lighten my load.

Rant: Students need to act like high school students at lunch

You would think high school students have the mental capacity to put a plate in a bin, but as anyone who has seen the lunchroom and rest of the school during fifth period can tell you, that is not the case.

First of all, the fact that there have been signs put up saying, “Don’t push your trays under the couches,” speaks for itself. Our poor janitors are already putting too much time and effort into cleaning up around school.  They shouldn’t also have to go searching for missing trays in their off-time.

Second, students have been throwing food. Now, I don’t know if it’s just this one table of junior and senior boys throwing across two other tables to — you guessed it —- a table of more junior and senior boys, but this needs to stop. I do not want to be spending my precious lunch time dodging flying food.

As a high school student, we should be old enough to know that food fights in the lunchroom are not appropriate.

Rave: A lot of clubs offered at VHS

Vashon Island High School has a lot of clubs to offer and has many participants in those clubs. Some of those clubs may help with classes, such as Japanese, Spanish, or Math Club. Others are simply for pleasure, or are for helping others, such as Guide Dogs, Outdoor Club, and Green Team.

These clubs are enjoyable for students who want to have more involvement in the school culture. It is nice to have clubs happening on different days of the week, and being able to spend my free time in different locations each day during lunch, with different groups of people.
