a must see or must avoid?

On February 17, 2023, the MCU added the third installment to the Ant-Man trilogy: “Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania.” Yes, the title has the word Quantumania in it. The film brings back stars like the timeless Paul Rudd and the prolific Michelle Pfieffer. It also welcomes a new villain, Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors. It received a 48 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the two Marvel movies to get below 50 percent. While this movie has gained a lot of bad press, there are positive aspects that must be acknowledged.
Highlights: The acting in this movie is incredible. It features Michael Douglas as “Hank Pym”, Kathryn Newton as “Cassie,” and Evangeline Lilly as “The Wasp.” Marvel movies are known for having incredibly good VFX, and “Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania” doesn’t disappoint. The Quantum Realm or QR, made up of VFX, is its own world with a variety of unique creatures and scenery. This movie is so visually stunning that it somewhat distracts from the worse parts of the movie, which—let’s be honest—were plentiful.
Lowlights: This movie, to be blunt, overstayed its welcome. At a runtime of two hours and five minutes, it was too long. By the hour and 30 minute mark, it had me checking my phone. This is exasperated by the fact that there is no build up to get into the QR.
Almost as soon as the movie starts, we enter the QR. To me, this feels like a missed opportunity. I would have loved to see Scott Lang or Ant-Man take a longer journey to get to the QR, and only after he has undergone some character development does he become the hero. Because of how quickly they enter the QR, the rest of the movie meanders and drags on.
The other big lowlight is the ending. Everyone is able to make it home, even after the portal to Earth is destroyed. The idea that everything has to end up okay is ridiculous. For a story to feel fulfilling, there has to be something that is lost. The fact that nobody has to stay in the QR was such a disappointment. Marvel, do better.
So, should you go and see this movie? I say yes. Although it’s long, fast-paced, and convoluted at times, it has its moments. The actors in this movie are phenomenal, and the VFX, true to form for Marvel, are incredible. While this movie didn’t have me on the edge of my seat, it was still a fun experience. Memorable, no, but will it serve as a good form of entertainment for two hours and five minutes? Why yes, yes it will.
