From the young age of three, junior Maijah Sanson-Frey knew she wanted to be a musician.

“I’ve loved music my entire life because my dad was a musician, and my mom was a dancer,” said Sanson-Frey.

When she was in kindergarten, Sanson-Frey was in a talent show and sang an a cappella version of “Tomorrow” from the musical Annie.

“Since I was so little I didn’t even really see any reason to be nervous,” Sanson-Frey said.  “I was just having fun.”

Sanson-Frey’s aspirations for the future are influenced by several famous musicians.

“My big dream is to be a famous singer-songwriter like my love Amy Winehouse, but with the stability of someone like Adele or Beyonce,” Sanson-Frey said.

“I look up to Adele a lot because she writes her own music and is Incredibly talented, all while becoming famous whilst not fitting into society’s conventional body norm for pop stars,” Sanson-Frey said. “She’s really helped me to focus more on my music and love my body no matter what trashy magazines think.”

Sanson-Frey wrote her first song at the age of 10, called “Be Me,” and more recently, a song called “Cinnamon,” which she sang at an open mic during her freshman year.

Sanson-Frey doesn’t just sing solos. She recently put together a band called Twice Nice with a couple of her friends. They played their first concert at the Vera project on January 6. Since then, Sanson-Frey has written new songs for the band in preparation for their next big performance.

“Right now, the plan is to make some cassettes and even some vinyls and T-shirts so we can have some [merchandise] by the time Share the Stage rolls around when we open for Taco Cat in March,” said Sanson-Frey

Sanson-Frey’s dreams for the future in music do not rely on whether or not she becomes famous.

“No matter what happens though, the music is the most important thing, and it will be in my life no matter what.”
