“Picnics in the Park” is a program that provides free lunches for youth on Vashon. This year, lunches will be served at Ober Park on Mondays through Fridays from 12 to 1:30 p.m., starting June 25 and continuing until August 31.
Bagged lunches will be provided to kids ages up through high school. Last year, “Picnics in the Park” gave away 4,700 lunches, and this year organizers plan to increase that amount. These meals are made and served entirely by volunteers.
“We know [kids] need food during the summer, and we’d like to see them get it,” said Bailey de Iongh, activity coordinator for Picnics in the Park.
Picnics in the Park was made possible through the financial support of organizations such as the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank, the Vashon Park District and the King County Library.
“I am always looking for young people [to volunteer] to be activity leaders or to play music for the younger kids,” Bailey said.
Those who would like to volunteer can contact Rachael Hetrick, the volunteer coordinator, via email at volmanager@vashonfoodbank.org.
