Freshman
14 Years Old
First Year on the Riptide Staff
Since middle school I have been excited about being part of the Riptide. I’ve always enjoyed writing, even before joining the Riptide, but writing for the newspaper makes it feel like there is more meaning behind what I write. Before school started, my older brother, Jack Kelly was telling me that he was excited to be on the staff for his first year, and I wanted to try to get into the class as a freshman. This process took getting a recommendation from Mr. Denlinger’s previous students, and possibly teacher recommendation. I was able to get recommendations from some of my close friends at crew, and from Jack, which helped me land a spot in the class.
In my free time, I enjoy rowing for the Vashon Island Rowing Club, I enjoy playing basketball, and I also enjoy playing the cello. I’m often playing and listening to music, and I spend most of my extra time playing whatever sport I can get into. I enjoy writing, but I like writing specifically for the Riptide because I have a precise topic that I am writing about, rather than my normal writing, which consists of endless rambling.
I am excited to work this year with people that have more experience, and I am excited to learn more about journalism as a whole.
