Students pick up new hobbies during quarantine

COVID-19 has left many people in a state of boredom. With too much time on their hands, many students at VHS have taken different approaches to stay busy.
Senior Sienna Stromberg has been exercising as a way of getting out of her house. She participated in a virtual triathlon, joined the crew team, and has been going on runs and hikes.
“I do sports year-round normally, and so, over quarantine, not having a sport was pretty sad,” Stromberg said.
Crew has been one of the silver linings for Stromberg during her quarantine. She enjoys getting outside, being with her close friends, and pushing herself.
Freshman Olivia Boyes has also been exercising. This has included walking her dogs, attending soccer practices, and working out. She also picked up reading over the summer.
“I like [reading] because it's something that I feel could be done at any time and it's easier for me because it passes the time when I'm not doing school,” Boyes said.
Sophomore Maya Sims has been painting and has started knitting. She was swimming and paddleboarding over the summer and is now hiking and hanging out with her dog.
“[These activities] are a fun way to get out of the house,” Sims said.
Junior Blake Gibbons has mostly been working on his farm. He has been given a lot more time to do this because he is not at school all day. The next thing he wants to do with his time is clean out his workshop.
“I want to carve out another plane. I enjoy carving planes out of wood and making them into models.” Gibbons said.
Senior Ty Radford has been walking a lot, watching TV, and playing basketball with his friends.
“I never really went on walks before, but during quarantine, especially over summer, I go on an hour or two walk every day,” Radford said. “It’s relaxing and it gets me out of the house… I can get a break for a little bit.”
Sophomore Emerson Hickman has been exercising and reading. But on top of that, he has been practicing some virtual magic that he can perform to his classmates. He has also gotten into archery.
“I already had a bow but I wanted to get into traditional archery,” he said.
Hickman, along with many other students at VHS, is thankful for all the free time.
“I would've had a lot more excuses to not do the stuff I'm doing if I had been in school,” he said.
