By Colby Merrill, Reporter
Wake up! It’s 2022 now and we have a lot of shows coming to streaming this year that already have hot buzz. This article is to act as a refresher to shows returning for new seasons and your anticipation for shows streaming this year.
Amazon Prime Video
Amazon brings new series and seasons to its Prime Video service this year. “The Marvelous Ms. Maisel” will be back on February 18th with it’s fourth season. On July 3rd, fans of the superhero social commentary “The Boys”’ will finally be able to see their favorite Villains on screen. In September, Amazon will be producing the highest budgeted TV series of all time, the 100 million show that will follow the events of Peter Jackson’s “Lord Of The Rings” Trilogy. There is not much information about the “The Rings Of Power” series, other than it takes place at least one hundred years prior “The Fellowship Of The Ring” (2001) and will focus on Sorron’s rebirth and the Rings that were given to people of MiddleEarth.
AppleTV
The not so long awaited third and possibly final season to the beloved “Ted Lasso” will be coming to streaming this summer. After season two’s cliffhanger ending, many people are speculating where the series will go since character motives have changed and the show has become more realistic.
Disney+
Coming soon from Disney/Pixar: “Willow”, a sequel series to the 1988 film. Also returning the third season of real life highschool singer drama, “Highschool Musical: the Musical: The Series” will be streaming later this year. Despite describing shows on other streaming platforms, in the “Star Wars” and “Marvel” franchises I’ll only be listing their titles instead. from Star Wars: “The Book of Boba Fett” fills in the gaps from “The Return Of The Jedi” through “The Mandalorian”. “Obi-Wan Kenobi” will takes place ten years after “Revenge Of The Sith” and see the Jedi master rematch against his apprentice: Anakin Skywalker A.K.A. Darth Vader. Little is known about “Andor” other than it will take place before the events of “Rogue One” and it will focus on the character of the same name. “The Bad Batch season 2” will continue to expand the universe of Star Wars while making it feel more linke. “The Mandalorian” season 3 will release at the end of the year as fans speculate the return of Grand Admril Thrawn. and from Marvel: “MoonKnight” will see what has been described as Marvel Studios most “brutal” show starring the very talented Oscar Issac. “She hulk” will be a fourth wall breaking comedy series that will finally introduce one of Marvel’s greatest Lawyers. “I Am Groot” is an animated show and not much else is known about it’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ending Marvel’s shows this year is fan favorite “Ms. Marvel” a young girl who just wants to be an Avenger.
Hulu
In a partnership with FX, HULU will be dropping the third season of “Atlanta” on March 24. The series follows Earn Marks played by Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) who also created the show, directs, writes, and produces as well. The show is a dark surreal comedy illustrating short fictional stories from the streets of Atlanta. “Pam And Tommy”, a show following the leaked sextape and scandal of Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson, is also currently streaming.
HBO/HBOmax
Arguably the best streaming service because of its overall highly praised content. HBO is releasing much new content. “House of Dragons” is a prequel to the “Game of Thrones” series, and according to IMDB is the most anticipated show of 2022. The high school drama series “Euphoria” season 2 is wrapping up soon along with DC’s “Peacemaker” show, a spinoff of “The Suicide Sqaud” (2021).
Netflix
There are a lot of Netflix originals that the service will be releasing as per usual. But oftentimes streamers do not know about new series until within a couple weeks of release. There are few popular shows that have been confirmed to have new seasons in 2022. Of these shows are the highly anticipated fourth season of “Strangers Things” (coming this summer) as well as “Ozark” season 4. “Umbrella Academy” season 3 does not have an official release date but will be released in 2022. Also greenlit for another season is “Cobra Kai”, which will be on it’s fifth season and release close to the end of the year.
Paramount+
The big new show is “HALO” based on the video games series of the same name. “Star Trek” fans will receive a dose of one of their favorite Next Generation characters, and “Picard” with season 2 releasing on March 3rd.
There is so much more that we don’t know is coming out in 2022 but what we do know is that this year will be filled with shows for anyone. Whether it be a heavy drama or a continuation of a cinematic universe, streaming is bringing entertainment to your home more than ever before this year.
