The amazing, spectacular, ultimate prep kit
to Spider-Man: No Way Home
By Colby Merrill, Reporter
With the release of the third film in the Tom Holland Spider-man franchise on Friday, Dec. 17. As a Spider-man fan and critic, I have created this prep kit if you plan on or decide to see this new installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (NWH) will bring back many villains from previous Spider-Man films. This movie will not be creating new foes for Spider-Man, but instead antagonists from Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s films will be reintroduced.
The main antagonist Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn, whose alter ego is “The Green Goblin,” is set on vengeance. Osborn, who’s somewhat of a scientist, injected himself with a test serum that caused him to lose his mind. He died after getting impaled by his glider in the original Spider-Man film in 2002. After his death, he repeatedly returned to haunt his son Harry Osborn in the two sequels.
J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson, from the Maguire trilogy, will also be coming back. Surprisingly, he showed up in the end credits to “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and revealed Spider-Man’s identity to the world. The opinionated reporter will likely be spreading fake news to negatively impact Spider-Man in NWH.
Alfred Molina’s Otto Octavius A.K.A. Doc Ock From “Spider-Man 2” (2004) will also be returning in the new movie. The last time we encountered the tentacled scientist, he sacrificed himself to destroy the thing he spent his life building: A small sun capable of creating renewable energy.
Unfortunately, the side effects included a strong magnetic force that would never stop devouring New York as it expands. Ock drowned in the river with his four robotic arms and the small sun he had created so that he could save New York.
The final villain from the Maguire films Flint Marco otherwise known as The Sandman will return to cause chaos played by Thomas Haden Church. The last time we saw Marco was during the aftermath of the final battle in “Spider-Man 3” (2007) when he confessed his guilt to the death of Uncle Ben and was forgiven by Peter. Marco is one of two villains who did not “die” on screen, but unlike the next villain we talk about, Marco is suggested to have a change of heart and character because of Peter’s forgiveness. It is unclear if his change of heart from that film will have changed prior to NWH.
From the Marco Webb Duology with Andrew Garfield: Rhys Ifans’s Curt Conners named The Lizard from “The Amazing Spider-Man” (2012) will come seeking vengeance on Peter. Conners, a professor who’s disabled by the loss of his arm, used the genetics of lizards to grow his arm back. Unfortunately like many comic villains, something went wrong and he was transformed into a giant lizard. In the movie from 2012, Conners would sometimes revert back to a human but it is unclear if the Lizard we see in the No Way Home trailer will be able to revert back to Conners.
Jamie Foxx’s Max Dillon, The Shocking Electro, will also return with motivation to kill after he was thought to be killed at the hands of Garfield’s Spider-Man. Dillon was saved by Spidey and quickly became obsessed with him. His obsession with Spidey made him crazy, and after falling into a tank of experimental electric eels, he was given his powers, which include traveling through electricity and shooting bolts. Electro was killed by electrocution when Garfield’s Spider-Man used Dillon’s bolts against him. His anger in the NWH trailer seems to be motivated by all of the events from “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014).
Dr. Strange will also be in the film to try to help Peter redact the knowledge of his identity from the rest of the world. This event is what many fans believe will further open the multiverse for the MCU after the events of “Loki” and “What If..?” .
*Potential Spoilers Ahead*
Numerous rumors and reports have been circulated for the past year that hint toward the return of the Spider-Man actors, specifically Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield; however, Marvel and affiliates with the film have been very unclear whether or not Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will return along with other fan favorites.
Favorites include Kirsten Dunst’s MJ, Perla Haney-Jardine’s Penny Marko from the Raimi trilogy, and Sally Field’s Aunt May from the Webb duology. The reports also hint at characters outside of the other Spider-Man films entering the MCU. Many fans believe Matt Murdock A.K.A. Daredevil and his partner in law Foggy Nelson from Netflix’s Daredevil series will appear. This has also been supported by a possible leaked photo. Despite whether the other actors or any of the rumored actors return for “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” this multiversal clash of villains will surely be Peter Parker’s greatest challenge yet.
