Former croquet club adviser Melissa Kehl and the once weekly club’s members have now rallied around a new sport: badminton.
The first meeting was Friday, March 2, in the school gym, and the club will continue to gather weekly at lunchtime for the remainder of the year.
“People hear about it, or somebody will drag a friend along,” Kehl said in regards to gaining members.
Kehl decided that on every Friday following mid-winter break, badminton will be available in the gym to all students. Kehl expects more members to join as the club continues.
In regards to joining, she suggests that students “just show up.” No commitment is needed — the only request is that students wear tennis shoes.
Freshman Ty Radford is one of the few members. Before joining, he had only ever played badminton as an activity for a required P.E. class and in friends’ backyards, but he decided he enjoyed it enough to join badminton club.
“I am totally planning on trying to fill up the badminton club,” Radford said. “I feel like people could get behind this.”
Radford was introduced to the badminton club by freshman Zach Van Dusen. An original a croquet club member, Van Dusen is excited to begin playing and hopes to appear on the court regularly.
“I will definitely teach others to play if they ask,” Van Dusen said. “I hope to play in the club throughout the year — it seems like it will be a fun experience.” All members of the badminton club are excited to play, and look forward to collaborating with friends. “I’m looking forward to having some good, clean fun and playing badminton,” Radford said.
