Islanders are hungry for more food diversity
By Milo Carr, Co-Content & Social Media Editor

Pretty much anywhere you go in the world, you will find a delicious variety of food. Except Vashon, where you will find many lovely restaurants selling different variations of the same food. This is not really an issue for tourists, but they are not the ones who have to choose between burgers, pizza, and bankruptcy every time they decide to eat out.
Vashon currently has three pizza places and that is more than enough. Each one has a unique redeeming feature, but do we really need three? That’s too many pizza places for a 13-mile-long island. It is so incredibly frustrating to crave Italian food that isn’t pizza, but have your only other option be frozen take-away from Thriftway. The island needs more food diversity, and I know I am not the only one who feels this way.
I do not expect a veritable smorgasbord from a small tourist town, but seriously, we do not need any more pizza or burger places. The ones we have now can stay, but if I see one more person open a pizza parlour or cafe, I am going to go nuts.
In order to enjoy diverse food options on the island, one has to be prepared to drop a small fortune on dinner. I could probably find some decent Italian food at one of the more expensive restaurants, but I would have to decide between cannoli and college.
I do not think I’m asking for much― I just want some originality and some culture. So to anyone who is reading this and happens to be thinking about opening a restaurant in town, please do not go with something simple and generic. Try to include some recipes from your great grandmother’s cookbook. It is infuriating to have three affordable options for dinner, and islanders will thank you for giving them more choices.
