In the upcoming months, Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA) will be holding auditions for their annual Original Works performance.
In case you haven’t heard of this island tradition, dancers — sometimes accompanied by added talents such as live music, visual design and poetry — choreograph an original piece to be performed at the Original Works show in March.
Hip-hop, jazz, ballet and modern are just a few styles of dance you may see at Original Works.
“This is what makes this show so special and a joy to watch; you don’t know what to expect next,” Crissy Baker, an organizer of the show, said.
The organizers of Original Works are asking that dancers of a level 4 — or a strong dance background — audition. If you are interested, VCA will be holding auditions at the Blue Heron dance studio at 6 p.m. on Dec. 12, Jan. 16 and Feb. 13.
For the initial audition, groups or soloists must prepare 30 seconds to one minute of work to show the panel of judges. This panel is made up of dance teachers who will also be your coaches throughout the process if your audition gets through.
When you audition, you will need to have selected your music and have a costume concept ready.
So, dancers, what are you waiting for? Here’s an opportunity to showcase your creativity to the community!
