The final school sports have come to an end, thus wrapping up the sports season for the school year. The spring sports that the school offered this year included boys baseball, boys golf, boys soccer, boys track, girls golf, girls tennis, girls softball and girls track.
Boys Baseball:
Boys varsity baseball finished the season with a 4-8 record, placing fourth out of the five teams in the Nisqually League. This stands in stark contrast to last year’s boys varsity baseball team, which won the state championship. This year’s team had nine underclassmen on the 16-man varsity squad. Baseball is looking for a successful future due to the fact that there is a surplus of younger players.
Boys Golf:
The boys golf team had a 1-7 record for the 2017 season in the Nisqually League. The team was made up of a mere seven boys, all of which were upperclassmen — four seniors and three juniors. There is no clear future for the team as few incoming players are expected to join.
Boys Soccer:
Boys soccer finished off their league season with a 5-2-1 record. Their overall record was 9-5-1, earning the team second place in the Nisqually League. There were seven underclassmen boys and 15 upperclassmen on the varsity team. The junior varsity team had 13 underclassmen and three upperclassmen. Having so many underclassmen will establish a close team early on, which is always an advantage in team sports.
Boys Track:
There are 14 boys on the track team. Six are freshmen, seven are sophomores, and one is a junior. With the majority of athletes being underclassmen, this makes for a positive future if said athletes decide to continue with the sport.
The team finished with a total of seven points, taking the bottom spot in the nine-team league, 110 points behind frontrunner Bellevue Christian.
Girls Softball:
The girls softball team had a 7-10 record and advanced to the postseason. On Friday, May 19, the team lost 10-9 in a close game with Coupeville High School. This was a loss in the district bracket, taking them out of the running for district champions. The team has a total of six upperclassmen and 10 underclassmen.
The relatively large number of underclassmen has some members of the team expecting a lot of success in the coming years. The underclassmen team has a close bond due to the fact that they have all played together for many years.
Girls Tennis
The girls tennis team brought home the title of Nisqually League Champions with four wins and one loss. The team of 36 was split into varsity and junior varsity. The team was named League Champions when they played and defeated rival school, Charles Wright, twice. The varsity consisted of 13 girls, while junior varsity had 23. The varsity squad has all upperclassmen, although there will be plenty of underclassmen players to fill the shoes of the graduating seniors.
Girls Track:
Girls track had a total of nine athletes participating this season. Six athletes were underclassmen while the other three were seniors. There was one junior. The team finished with a total of 52 points, which is eighth place out of nine teams in the league. Katherine Andrus and Lauren Jenks both made it to the state championships. Andrus made it in the long jump, the triple jump and the javelin. The 800 meter race was won by Jenks, securing her a place at state.
