School spirit soared through the crowds on March 24 at the basketball game. Students from all classes attended to see their favorite teachers shoot some hoops in the game named “Bawlers vs. Ballers” between the high school staff and seniors.
Advertising leading up to the event featured a video of teachers Mr. Butler and Mr. Blomgren prepping for the big game, egging on their senior opponents. Students and teachers shared a great deal of camaraderie, leading to a large turnout.
This fundraiser, hosted by the sophomore class, was the first of its kind for the school — although it was very successful. The game brought a bigger audience than many normal basketball teams have had during their seasons. The outcome of the game came as a shock to many. The staff maintained a lead over the seniors for most of the game and were able to pull away in the end. The final score was 35-24 — staff for the win!
Many seniors made predictions during warmups, the majority of which would turn out to be wrong.
Students showed their support for the seniors by wearing an all-black ensemble or a green-and-gold outfit for the staff. The majority of the stands appeared to be in support of the underdogs — the staff.
As stated before, the game results were anything but to be expected. In the first and second quarter, the staff took the first points and came away at halftime with the lead.
During halftime, the band 20 Eyes performed an exciting performance that rallied the crowd and featured multiple original songs. It featured sophomore Forest “Frosty” Bowden on vocals and the bass guitar, and Jacob Bowden, who attends McMurray, on the drums.
After the third quarter, the seniors closed the point gap and ended up coming out of the third quarter with the lead, just before being overtaken again by the staff in the final quarter.
Principal Danny Rock acted as the announcer throughout the game, describing real-time events and entertainment. The Most Valuable Players, as decided by Rock, were Austin Fujita for the seniors and Mr. Callender for the staff.
All in all, the game appeared to be quite a success with an energetic crowd, talented band and a game this school will never forget. It would not be a surprise if this seniors vs. staff game became a school tradition.
