Festive Fall Garland:

What You’ll Need:

Orange Yarn (shading is negotiable)

Green Yarn

Plastic Leafs

One sewing needle

Fishing line or thread (white or clear)

A book or something similar (7” across)

Cloth Scissors

Command hooks or nails

First we are going to make the pumpkins:

If you follow these instructions you will be making four pumpkins at a time.

  1. Wrap your orange yarn around your book about 100 times.
  2. Carefully slide your yarn off the book, make sure to keep the loop shape.
  3. Cut four 12 inch sections of orange yarn off your original ball of yarn (not the loops you just wrapped)
  4. Tie the 12 inch sections of yarn to section the loop into four parts. Make sure your knots are tight and double knotted.
  5. Cut the loop between the sections of yarn you used to tie the loop.
  6. Take your four pumpkins and fluff them up so they look like pom poms.
  7. Use your scissors to trim any long pieces of yarn and to shape them into balls. Be sure not to cut off the extra “tails” that you tied around the loop.
  8. Cut eight, 12 inch sections of green yarn.
  9. Lay two of the green sections between the ends of the “tails” and double knot the tails around the green yarn.
  10. Trim the tails so they blend into the rest of the pumpkin.
  11. Tie the four green ends of yarn into a loose slip knot to make the stem.
  12. Trim off the extra green yarn from the top of the stems.
  13. Repeat steps 1-12 until you have as many pumpkins as desired.

Once you have made as many pumpkins as desired you can start making the garland.

  1. Decide how long you want to make your garland.
  2. Cut your thread or fishing line so it’s the length you want it plus another 2-4 feet extra.
  3. Take your thread or fishing line and thread this through your needle.
  4. Stick the needle and thread through one of the stems of a pumpkins.
  5. Pull the thread through until your pumpkin is about a foot from the other end of your thread.
  6. Tie a knot around the stem of your pumpkin to keep it in place.
  7. Next take a leaf and stick the needle through the back of the leaf on one side of the stem and the front of the leaf on the other side. Make sure there is enough room between these spots so that the leaf hangs right.
  8. Slide the leaf down the thread and position it as close to the pumpkin as you want.
  9. Add another pumpkin using the same steps as before, simply position it in reference to the leaf.
  10. Continue putting leafs and pumpkins on your garland until it is as long as you want.
  11. There should be excess thread on the ends for hanging. Wait to trim this until you have your garland hung.
  12. For the hanging I would recomend command hooks, they make several kinds I would use the clear, small plastic ones.
  13. Take your garland and decide how you would like to position it.
  14. Put up your command hooks or nails where you want the garland to hang from.
  15. Tie loops in both ends of your excess thread the hang on the hooks or nails.
  16. Once you have your garland hung, trim off the excess thread.
  17. When the season is over you can store your project in a box and reuse it next fall.
